my biography

I started making music under the name Colab in 1985 in Stockholm, Sweden, together with my older brother. We never actually created anything of significance, but it got us both started making music.

At the time, we played on a Roland SH-5 accompanied by a synced TB-303/TR-606 combo and recorded on a two-track Fostex (with tape delay). Later, we went separate ways musically, and I invested in a Roland D-10 and an Atari ST/Steinberg Pro 24 and spun off the musical style from industrial sounds to a more ambient electronic sound.

Musically, I took a hiatus for many years and focused more on just playing piano. Then in 2002 I discovered Propellerhead Reason and revived Colab as an illbient electronic/sometimes more romantic instrumental music, and currently make all my music off Reason in my home studio in Toronto, Canada.

I do both personal work and produce other people's music. This page will contain a mix of both.

Pop Up Player

Title: Goin' home to Macon: Enrolled in contest: Micro-Phones (vote for me!); Description: Maybe the direction of this track will surprise some of you who are familiar with my music; and maybe not. This is a collaboration with Panu Moon (ccmixter.org/people/panumoon/profile) and I created all intrumentation using Reason 4. The vocals and the music hit very close to home for me. There’s something there that shares common roots, despite the different backgrounds (Atlanta and Stockholm).
Title: Pacific Coast (feat. Jenny Grettve): Enrolled in contest: Micro-Phones (vote for me!); Description: This is a reinterpretation of a reinterpretation. I had previously posted a song with vocals by Jenny Grettve, which she had recorded for a track by Blake (both of them artists here at MI7). Because I liked the vocals so much, I wanted to place them in another context, and this is the result. For more information, see Jenny's profile (http://community2.mi7.com/profile/9076)
Title: rocha - myst (colab remix): Description: A while back, I had been sent a few tracks by rocha (community2.mi7.com/profile/1463) and had thought about doing a remix of one or two. They were fully-mixed mp3 files, so it wasn't as easy as I had thought to find an angle; but I got going with a track called "myst". Here's the result - the intro is mostly taken from the original, but with effects/filters/drums added; and then I develop the theme from there. Go to rocha's page for more tracks. He's a very talented musician.
Title: Blake - Exoskeleton Landslide (colab brittle bones remix): Description: This is a collaboration track with MI7 musician Blake (http://community.mi7.com/profile/2525), who allowed me to add instruments and rhythms to his excellent experimental track. This is more of a radio edit - shorter and a bit more ambient-like.
Title: HaveMercy - Screwed (colab rapid descent remix): Description: HM made available a sample pack for his stunning "screwed" (see http://community.mi7.com/profile/7693 for the original), and this is the result of playing around with it for a bit. I've kept the entire original structure with practically all sounds intact, but worked to add a consistent harmony/beat to it as the original is more of an experimental piece with an amazing vocal performance. Huge thanks to HM for giving me the opportunity to take this on. It was a great pleasure.

I've got my last distraction coming this Friday (my grand piano!) and this I promised myself is the last thing I needed to finish an album, we shall see! Sorry I never got those multi track files to you, I think they are lost now but I hope to re-record the tracks and it would be great to get some remixes.

"Lost Prologue" works the best for me I think because it has more variety in it but its all very listenable

I wouldn't mind doing a thom yorke style vocal over one of your tracks if you'd like some time. If you're in toronto still check out Sister Euclid at the orbit Lounge on Monday nights. It's one of the things I miss about the city. Thanks for listening to my chicken coop productions.

After a couple of more darker tracks this is a surprise to hear, (you mentioned it yourself)more happy music. For me it is also music with very positive energy.
They have a mood like zero gravity.
Loecus has a bit more forward drive character and Ginger has a more airy one. But both are very beautiful.
This is really beautiful music, a joy to listen to, Master of Chill! :-)

colab | 9 months ago: FYI - the player allows you to listen to all of Ginger - just won't allow you to _skip_. Goldarnit - you just need to buckle down and listen through the whole thing. :)

(Listener's tip - there's a good bit happening at 3:15 or so. At least if by "good" you mean "different".)
